Facial Thirds: How Vertical Face Proportions Are Measured

Facial thirds split your visible face height: upper from trichion to glabella, middle from glabella to subnasale, lower from subnasale to menton. Equal thirds is a historical drawing rule, not a biological law and not a beauty target. Hairline shape, age, ancestry, sex, dental pattern, and head posture all move the segments. Do not ask whether every third matches. Ask which segment is carrying the height, and whether your photo is clean enough to measure.

What are the three facial thirds?

Upper third: trichion to glabella. Middle: glabella to subnasale. Lower: subnasale to soft tissue menton. Measure all three on the same vertical axis, on a level frontal photo.

Some diagrams swap in brow level, nasion, or another cranial point for glabella. That is a different measurement. Name the landmarks or you cannot repeat the number.

You can split the lower third again at stomion: upper lip height versus the chin bearing segment. That internal split often tells you why the lower third looks long or short better than the total alone.

Evidence

Are equal facial thirds actually normal?

Farkas and colleagues tested classical facial canons with direct anthropometry. Strict vertical equality poorly represented the average face (PMID 3883374). A drawing rule is not a measured biological norm. Do not treat it as one.

Same story across populations. Equal thirds were uncommon in Greek adults and nearly absent in a Turkish young adult sample (PMID 23147325, PMID 14625792). In a Saudi sample selected as aesthetically pleasing, the three segments still differed significantly (PMID 25889948).

That does not throw the map out. It stops you from treating equal thirds as an ideal. Use the thirds to see where the height sits. A difference is not a defect.

Upper Third

Why the hairline is the weakest landmark

Trichion moves with hair loss, hairline maturation, styling, transplantation, and natural hairline shape. A high upper third on you can be the hairline, not the frontal bone and not craniofacial growth.

If the hairline is hidden or irregular, drop confidence or skip the upper segment. Do not guess trichion through hair. For repeated scans, pull the hair back the same way every time.

Middle and Lower Thirds

What changes the visible vertical balance

Your middle third is nasal root level, nasal length, midface height, and where subnasale sits. Your lower third is upper lip length, dental height, mandibular height, chin height, and soft tissue thickness.

Photographic analysis of 827 frontal faces found that upper, middle, and lower third ratios contributed differently to perceived sex typicality and attractiveness. They did not act as one equal thirds score (PMID 37489972). Read the three numbers. Do not collapse them into a canon.

How to photograph facial thirds

Front photo. Head level. No yaw. Lips neutral. Full hairline and chin in frame. Camera near face height, far enough back that the center of the face does not balloon.

Pitch is the big error. Raise your chin and the middle face shortens and the jaw outline changes. Lower it and you get the reverse. Hair over trichion, or a crop that clips menton, kills the endpoints.

If trichion is hidden, Solar should treat the upper third as lower confidence. A clear scan can measure surface proportion. It cannot tell you whether a long segment is bone or teeth.
