Facial width to height ratio, usually shortened to fWHR, divides facial breadth by a selected upper face height. The formula looks simple. It is not. Researchers use different vertical endpoints. Some measure from the upper lip to the upper eyelids, some to the brow, some from nasion. Those variants are not interchangeable. fWHR can describe your face shape and it can move first impressions. It cannot read personality, testosterone, aggression, or character from one portrait.

How is fWHR calculated?
Measure facial width across the left and right zygomatic extremes. Divide that distance by an upper face height. The ratio has no unit, so it travels across image sizes better than a raw pixel distance.
Name the denominator. A common photographic version uses the vertical distance from the highest point of the upper lip to the highest point of the upper eyelids. Other studies use brow level, nasion, or stomion. You cannot compare one value with another unless the definitions match.
Soft tissue zygion also moves with lighting, body fat, hairstyle, and contour detection. A three dimensional surface measurement and a two dimensional photograph can disagree.
Is fWHR a male facial trait?
A meta analysis of more than ten thousand faces found a small average male difference, with an effect size of 0.11, and a moderate association with body mass index (PMID 26181579). A small group difference does not make the ratio a reliable sex classifier for you.
A life course study of 17,607 passport images found higher male values mainly in young adulthood and a reversed pattern after age 48 (PMID 35592758). Another developmental analysis found that conclusions changed across fWHR variants and that lower face ratio showed a clearer sex specific growth pattern than standard upper face variants (PMID 33711068).
The direct answer is conditional. Some samples and definitions show dimorphism. Others do not. Age, body mass, population, and which denominator you pick all matter.
Why a broad upper face can look more dominant
The 2015 meta analysis found that larger fWHR was associated more strongly with observer judgements of threat and dominance than with measured behaviour (PMID 26181579). That is perception. It is not proof of aggression.
An observer may read width, brow position, cheekbone breadth, body size cues, and expression together. One ratio cannot tell you which cue drove the impression.
Does a higher fWHR make a face more attractive?
The same meta analysis found a negative average association between fWHR and attractiveness across the available face samples. Other work found that broader male faces could be preferred in a short term speed dating context (PMID 26181579, PMID 24458269). Context dependent. Not a universal direction.
Cross population research shows that morphological sexual dimorphism is not universally associated with attractiveness (PMID 37588529). Read fWHR next to eyes, jaw, cheekbones, lower face height, averageness, and the sex model you are using.
What fWHR cannot tell you
A face ratio cannot establish testosterone level, honesty, violence, infidelity, leadership, or personality in an individual. Group correlations are not a diagnostic test. Many reported associations depend on sample, analysis choice, and uncontrolled body size.
Expression is another confound. Raised brows increase the denominator. Tightened eyelids and cheek movement move the apparent landmarks. Use a neutral face. Save behavioural claims for actual behaviour data.
How to photograph fWHR
Level frontal portrait. Neutral brows. Relaxed eyelids. Closed relaxed lips. No yaw. Both zygomatic contours visible. Soft symmetrical light. Camera far enough back that perspective does not fatten the center.
Write down the exact landmark convention. Keep the convention, crop, distance, and expression identical if you want a before and after.
