Intercanthal Distance: How You Measure the Space Between the Eyes

Intercanthal distance is the horizontal span between your left and right inner eye corners. It is not pupil distance. It is not the distance between the outer eye corners. It describes central eye spacing and how the eyes sit against the nose. Raw millimetres move with head size, sex, ancestry, age, and method. Use ratios to eye length, nose width, and face width as well.

How do you measure intercanthal distance?

Mark the left and right endocanthia on a level frontal image. Measure the horizontal distance between them. In direct anthropometry the result is in millimetres. In image analysis, calibrate the pixel distance or express it as a ratio.

Endocanthion sits at the visible medial meeting of the lid margins. Epicanthal folds can partly cover the corner. That makes landmark placement less certain without changing the underlying orbital position.

Measure outercanthal distance and palpebral fissure length separately. Those values tell you whether a spacing impression comes from the central gap, the eyes themselves, or total orbital span.

Why raw distance is not enough

A 35 millimetre gap occupies a different proportion on a narrow face than on a broad face. Compare intercanthal distance divided by face width, divided by outercanthal distance, or set against average fissure length and nasal width.

The classical orbital canon proposes that intercanthal distance approximates one eye fissure length. The orbitonasal canon compares it with nasal alar width. These are references, not requirements.

Population Evidence

Why one spacing norm fails

A systematic pooled analysis included 67 studies, 22,638 people, and 118 population cohorts. Mean values differed across cohorts, sexes, and measurement methods (PMID 35475286). The authors called for moving beyond white neoclassical references.

Three dimensional comparison of Colombian and Mexican American young adults found population and sex differences in orbital measurements including intercanthal and outercanthal width (PMID 28665846). Nigerian three dimensional data is a distinct population reference, not a universal constant (PMID 34310429).

Classical Canons

Why eye width does not have to equal the central gap

A Turkish young adult sample found that intercanthal distance was often shorter than both nasal width and eye fissure length (PMID 14625792). A Chinese Han and North American white comparison found systematic differences in horizontal facial canons (PMID 9263550).

A face can sit off the one eye width rule without being abnormal or unattractive. The ratio is descriptive and population dependent.

Growth and Age

When intercanthal distance changes

A Korean lifespan study found that intercanthal growth peaked later than vertical fissure growth, between ages 14 and 16 in its sample (PMID 18349663). Adult changes can also reflect soft tissue aging and landmark visibility rather than orbital widening.

Longitudinal image comparison needs the same pose, distance, expression, and endpoint rule. If an adult selfie looks different, that is more likely camera geometry than new skeletal spacing.

How to photograph eye spacing

Use a direct frontal image with no yaw, level head, forward gaze, and both inner corners visible. Soft light reduces shadow at the nasal bridge. Avoid beauty filters that reshape the eyes or nose.

Short camera distance can enlarge the central nose and change how the inner corners sit against the alae. Use enough distance and a normal portrait field of view.
