Chin height is the vertical span of your chin, usually from the lower lip or labiomental region down to soft tissue menton. It is not the full lower face height. It is not chin projection. A taller chin lengthens the lower third beneath the mouth. A shorter chin compresses that segment. What you see mixes bony symphysis height, dental position, lip placement, and soft tissue thickness. Name the landmarks or the number is noise.

How is chin height measured?
On the surface you run a vertical line from stomion to soft tissue menton. A more chin specific line starts at the labiomental fold. On imaging you can measure the mandibular symphysis or related dental landmarks.
State the upper endpoint. Stomion to menton includes lower lip height and the fold. Fold to menton isolates more of the chin pad. Those are not interchangeable values.
Scale the distance to lower face height or total facial height. A 40 millimetre chin means something different on a small face than on a large one.
How chin height changes lower face shape
A tall chin lengthens the segment below your mouth. It can read more mature or structurally strong when width and projection support it. A narrow tall chin can instead read pointed. A short broad chin can read compact and square.
Pair vertical height with chin width and projection. The same height produces different shapes across those axes.
What three dimensional studies show
CT found sex differences in mandibular symphysis size and shape, not just one linear chin distance (PMID 32545912). Three dimensional photography in southern European adults gives population specific reference measurements and shows why direct facial norms need a defined sample (PMID 31462244).
Celebrity faces also showed jawline and chin dimorphism distributed across multiple measurements (PMID 38231202). Chin height contributes. It does not classify a face alone.
Why chin height can change without chin growth
Lip thinning, tooth wear, dental movement, and soft tissue descent can move the surface endpoints. Head pitch can also fake a vertical change in a photograph.
When you compare over time, keep lip rest, dental state, camera height, and head posture the same. A surface ratio does not tell you whether bone, teeth, or soft tissue caused the change.
How to photograph chin height
Level frontal view for the vertical ratio. Side view to confirm menton and lip posture. Lips gently together. No mentalis strain. Full chin in frame with space below it.
A tilted camera or a raised chin foreshortens the segment. Match distance and camera height across scans.
