Chin width is the transverse span of the central mental region. It is not jaw width. Jaw width spans the left and right mandibular angles. Chin width spans the anterior chin, usually between reproducible soft tissue or bony contour points. A wide chin can make your lower third look square and supported. A narrow chin can make the same jaw taper. What you see depends on chin height, projection, mouth width, and bigonial width.

Landmarks
- Mental region
- The central anterior portion of the mandible and overlying soft tissue that forms the chin.
- Bigonial width
- The transverse distance between left and right gonion at the jaw angles.
- Mandibular symphysis
- The central fused bony region that forms the chin.
- Soft tissue chin border
- A reproducible lateral contour point used to estimate visible chin width in a frontal image.
How is chin width measured?
On CT or three dimensional bone models the transverse mental region can be marked directly. On a frontal photograph you estimate the surface boundaries where the chin contour turns into the lower mandibular body. The surface method is less standardized.
Report the endpoint rule. Scale the span to bigonial width, mouth width, or facial width. Raw pixels depend on crop and camera distance.
Do not use the jaw corners as chin endpoints. That turns the measurement into bigonial width and erases the taper between jaw and chin.
How chin width changes lower face taper
A wide chin relative to the jaw makes a more parallel or square lower face. A narrow chin under a wide jaw makes a stronger taper. A narrow chin under a narrow jaw can read simply small rather than tapered.
Height changes the label. A wide short chin reads compact. A wide tall chin reads blockier. A narrow tall chin reads pointed. Projection decides whether any of those shapes carry into profile.
What sex difference studies show
CT found that male and female mandibular symphyses differ in both size and shape (PMID 32545912). Three dimensional reconstruction studies use multiple cranial measurements to assess dimorphism because no single chin span is enough (PMID 36914593).
White celebrity faces also showed dimorphic jawline and chin variables inside a broader feature pattern (PMID 38231202). Width contributes. It is not a sex test.
Why the visible width changes
Mentalis muscle, chin fat, beard shadow, skin thickness, and lighting change the contour you see. Clenching can change the lower face. It does not directly widen the bony chin.
A surface scan measures appearance. A skeletal claim needs imaging. Keep those layers apart.
How to photograph chin width
Level frontal image. No yaw. Neutral lips. Relaxed jaw. Entire mandibular border visible. Hair or beard covering the chin boundary wrecks the read.
Camera back enough to limit central face enlargement. Keep crop and scale matched across scans.
How Solar reads chin width
Solar estimates chin width as a ratio to jaw width and reads it beside chin height, chin projection, bigonial breadth, and lower face shape. That captures taper. It does not reward one raw width.
If the beard, hand, or crop hides the border, treat the value as lower confidence.
Chin width is the front of the jaw, not the whole jaw
Chin width tells you how the lower face terminates and how strongly it tapers from gonion to the midline. It is a separate measurement from jaw width.
Use ratios. Define the surface endpoints. Pair width with height and projection before you describe chin shape.
Read it against the rest of the measurements series. Trait context: what facial dimorphism is.
