Nasal tip projection is how far the tip extends forward from the facial plane. The common Goode method divides the perpendicular distance from the tip to the alar facial groove by nasal length. It is a ratio, not a raw millimetre target. It scales the tip against the nose. Underprojection makes the tip sit close to the face. Overprojection makes it dominate the profile. How is nasal tip projection measured?
In the Goode method, take nasal length from the root region to the tip. Then measure the perpendicular distance from the tip to the alar facial reference line. Divide projection by length. A value near 0.55 to 0.60 is a classical descriptive reference, not a universal ideal.
Other methods use vertical facial planes, subnasale, or direct linear distances. They are not interchangeable. A study can report real change within one method. Do not compare those values with another method.
Measure projection and rotation separately. A tip can rotate upward without moving forward. It can also project forward while keeping the same nasolabial angle if the lower nasal framework changes in another direction.

What underprojection and overprojection look like
An underprojected tip sits close to the facial plane. It can make the bridge look long or the nostrils look broad from the front. An overprojected tip extends farther forward and can dominate the lips and chin. Both descriptions are relationships, not moral labels.
Radix depth changes how you read it. A deep nasal root increases apparent length and can make ordinary tip projection look weaker. A shallow root can make the same tip look stronger. Chin retrusion also exaggerates nasal prominence even when the nose is unchanged.
What projection studies actually measure
A quantitative study of open rhinoplasty using a columellar strut measured changes in tip projection and rotation with the Goode ratio, not only surgeon impression (PMID 32062744). Another study compared columellar strut and caudal septal extension approaches using objective tip position measurements (PMID 31373990).
Increasing nasal tip projection can also alter perceived lip position because the nose is one endpoint of several profile lines (PMID 28418453). Do not score a projection change in isolation from the mouth and chin.
These are treatment studies, not population norms. They show that projection is measurable and that procedures can change it. They do not give you one ideal ratio for every face.
Why one ratio does not fit every nose
Anthropometric work in Kazakh adults was built to support population specific planning, not to import a single ethnic template (PMID 27500583). Studies of sex related nasal shape reach the same conclusion: projection is one of several correlated dimensions (PMID 18300984).
Skin thickness, cartilage form, alar base position, bridge height, and facial size all change how the ratio looks on you. Use population data as description, not a hierarchy.
Why selfies exaggerate nasal projection
Perspective is the main error. A close camera makes the nearest structure, usually the nose, look larger relative to the ear and cheek. Cropping does not fix perspective after you shoot.
Use a longer camera distance with moderate optical zoom. Keep the profile exact and the head level. Include the nasal root, alar groove, tip, lips, and chin so you can still see the ratio and the rest of the profile.
