Do not trace across a hump as if it were a straight bridge. If your dorsum is convex, fit the upper tangent to the segment above the change and write down the interval you chose. If the supratip is full, the lower segment can sit almost parallel with the bridge and the break can disappear.
The angle you see also depends on tip rotation and projection. Move the tip forward or upward and the lower tangent changes even if the upper dorsum stays put. Record nasal projection and nasolabial angle beside the break.

What does a stronger or softer break mean?
A stronger break separates the tip from the bridge. It can make the tip look more refined or more rotated. A softer break keeps a continuous dorsal line. That can make the nose look straighter, heavier, or more structurally dominant. Neither state is automatically attractive. The rest of your profile decides the read.
An image manipulation study tested preferences for the female supratip break. Viewers changed their read when that feature moved and the rest of the profile stayed controlled (PMID 22421480). Gender and nasal shape research shows you read profile cues together, not as one isolated angle (PMID 18300984).
Read it as a relationship. Look at the break beside bridge height, tip projection, tip rotation, columellar show, and chin projection. A number without those variables can describe a contour. It cannot explain the whole face.
What the surgical literature establishes
Rhinoplasty literature treats the supratip break as anatomy you can change. Techniques that preserve or reposition the Pitanguy ligament can change supratip definition, rotation, and projection (PMID 36988451). Other work describes external approaches for fine control of this region (PMID 36042029).
Those papers show the contour is real anatomy and surgery can change it. They do not give you one ideal angle for all faces. Surgical cohorts are selected populations. Techniques differ. Aesthetic endpoints can depend on surgeon and patient preference.
The osseocartilaginous vault also changes along its length. The break you see comes from bone, upper lateral cartilage, lower lateral cartilage, skin thickness, and soft tissue tension. Not one hinge (PMID 25805276).
Why phone photos change the double break
A close phone camera enlarges the nose relative to the cheek and ear. A little head rotation turns a side profile into a partial front view and moves both dorsal tangents. Hard light can fake a break where the contour is actually smooth.
Expression matters too. Flared nostrils, lip tension, or a raised upper lip can change the tip base and make the lower segment look rotated. Compare images only when focal length, camera distance, head pitch, and expression match.
